The Pawtucket Hall of Fame honors James C. Potter, a Scottish-born engineer, inventor, and industrialist whose vision helped drive Pawtucket’s industrial growth. After founding several major machine companies—including Potter & Atherton, Howard & Bullough, and Potter & Johnston—he created jobs for thousands and advanced textile and machine tool innovation worldwide. A prolific inventor, his patents elevated Pawtucket as a hub of engineering excellence. As chairman of the Park Commission, he shaped Slater Park and gifted the Potter Casino to the community. His legacy endures through schools, civic landmarks, and industries that defined the city’s prosperity and identity.
